THE ARTISTS CAPSULE
We have long looked to our wide network of artist friends to work with creatively and collaboratively. Our Artists Capsule project is no different. We have invited four artists, friends of the brand, to customise a bag using their preferred medium. Each bag is limited edition and will be sold exclusively on the UK site.
All proceeds will go to the NHS to continue to support healthcare workers.
J&M Davidson is a brand born out of collaboration and under the creative direction of Katie Hillier, the Artists Capsule seeks to continue this philosophy by inviting four artists in different mediums to reimagine four different bags.
Each artist that we have invited to collaborate brings something different visually to the bag. Scottish-born Laura Lees has worked with the brand on a few key pieces for the Spring 2021 collection. Having made her name in textiles, Lees works with fashion brands as well as interior brands, to unite modern and traditional techniques in embroidery. She has chosen to embroider a rainbow over the Belt Saddle Bag. Designer Mimi Wade has hand painted delicate, kitsch cherries on her Pebble Bag and visual artist Ed Curtis brings to life his Belt Bag with his inimitable brush stroke in a palette of green and red. While artist Emily Barrett uses a mixture of embroidery and paint to create a design that references nature, with leaves, flowers and stars depicted in a palette of white and brown.
The capsule will launch on Sunday 5th July, which is exactly 72 years since the launch of the NHS, with all proceeds from the limited-edition bags going straight to the NHS to continue the support of our healthcare workers.
British American fashion designer Wade has used fashion as a way of transcending the banal and exploring fantasy through the use of kitsch references, colour and texture.
With a focus on interiors and fashion, embroidery has long been a tenet of Lee’s work. She’s collaborated with and crafted one-off pieces for labels Luella and Giles Deacon, as well as The Strokes and Courtney Love.
Curtis is an interdisciplinary artist spanning painting, fashion design and sculpture. His largely organic approach to drawing is guided by possibility and sees striking, riotous marks being realised on which ever medium is guiding him.
